Andras Geiger, 24, pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter on Wednesday.
Geiger crashed on Pleasant Hill Road in Cornwall on March 4. He admitted he had been driving in excess of 90 mph prior to the crash. The car left the roadway and struck a guardrail causing the passenger to be thrown out and killed, the District Attorney said.
Geiger sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision and was hospitalized for two months at Westchester Medical Center before being arraigned in County Court.
Subsequent blood tests also revealed that Geiger had marijuana in his system as well as a blood alcohol level of .07 percent.
“There is no excuse for driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs,” Hoovler said in a statement. “Deaths caused by impaired drivers are as tragic as they are preventable. Those who drive while intoxicated place the public, and themselves, at risk of death and other serious harm and must be dealt with severely. I urge all who are tempted to drive in that condition to consider the consequences; not only of prison, but of knowing that you were solely responsible for the death of an innocent person, or a loved one.”
The District Attorney’s Office will be recommending a sentence of three to nine years in prison when Geiger is sentenced on Dec. 7.
